The Comprehensive Industrial Pump Selection Manual

An interactive, engineering-verified selection guide for process engineers, plant operators, and procurement teams. Match duty conditions across 20+ industries, 21+ fluid types, and 10+ pump technologies with verified material compatibility and failure mode analysis.

1. Industrial Pump Technologies Overview

Core Hydraulics

Understanding pump operating principles is critical to preventing hydraulic mismatch, premature mechanical seal failure, and excessive energy consumption.

Air-Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD)

Positive displacement design driven by compressed air. Inherently dry-run capable, self-priming up to 7m, shear-sensitive fluid friendly, and explosion-proof (ATEX compliant).

Centrifugal Process Pumps

Rotodynamic pumps converting rotational energy into hydrodynamic energy. Optimal for continuous high-flow, low-viscosity liquid movement and circulation loops.

Submersible Pumps

Close-coupled motor and pump operating submerged directly inside sumps, pits, or tanks. Eliminates suction lift constraints and self-priming complications.

Industrial Lined Valves

Engineered PFA, FEP, and PP/PVDF lined valves for aggressive, ultra-corrosive chemical isolation, flow throttling, and back-flow prevention.

Rotary Lobe & Sanitary Pumps

Gentle positive-displacement pumping with zero shear damage. Ideal for dairy, food processing, pastes, pharmaceuticals, and CIP/SIP cleaning circuits.

Dosing & Metering Pumps

High-precision chemical injection with repeatable micro-volume stroke adjustment for water treatment, acid-base dosing, and boiler feed conditioning.

3. Explore by Industry & Application

Application Matrix

Chemical & Petrochemical

Acids, alkalis, solvents, polymers, and thermic oils. Compatibility must hold across entire temperature profile.

Water, Wastewater & ETP

Effluent transfer, dewatering, coagulant/polymer dosing, filter press feeding, and sludge dewatering.

Pharmaceutical & Food Processing

Shear-sensitive API fluids, syrups, edible oils, dairy, high-purity solvents, and automated CIP loops.

• Recommended: Sanitary Lobe Pumps, SS-316 AODD, EODD

Mining, Slurry & Construction

High abrasion resistance, pit dewatering, tailings disposal, and heavy solids handling.

4. Chemical & Fluid Compatibility Highlights

Wetted Materials

Never select a pump on flow and head alone. Material selection must match the specific liquid concentration, temperature, and specific gravity:

  • Hydrochloric Acid (HCl): Highly corrosive to standard 304/316 stainless steel. Requires Polypropylene (PP), PVDF or ETFE-lined Magnetic Drive Pumps.
  • Concentrated Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4 >90%): Severe oxidizing agent at high temperatures. Requires PVDF, PTFE wetted parts or Alloy 20 / Hastelloy-C.
  • Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl): Gassing fluid that causes vapour lock in standard suction lines. Requires PVDF/PTFE diaphragms and seal-less designs.
  • Flammable Solvents (Ethanol, Toluene, Acetone): ATEX Zone 1/2 compliance required. Use conductive Metallic AODD with grounded earth leads or flameproof electric motors.
  • Viscous Fluids (>500 cP): Centrifugal pumps experience severe flow loss. Transition to Gear Pumps, Lobe Pumps, or AODD Pumps.

5. Common Pumping Problems & Root Causes

Diagnostics

Cavitation / Excessive Noise

Occurs when available NPSH (NPSHa) is lower than required NPSH (NPSHr). Reduce suction line friction, lower fluid temperature, or elevate supply tank.

Mechanical Seal Leakage

Often triggered by dry running, chemical attack on elastomer O-rings, or thermal shock. Switch to Seal-less Magnetic Drive or AODD.

Premature Diaphragm Failure

Caused by chemical attack, excessive air supply pressure, or large abrasive solids puncturing the elastomer. Ensure proper backing plates and PTFE diaphragms.

Loss of Prime on Suction Lift

Air ingress in suction piping or damaged foot valves. Switch to true self-priming CSP pumps or AODD pumps.
